This book genre is a biography and the age range is 4-8 years old.

Before reading this book it looked like a book about art just based off the front cover. Once I read it I realized I was right however, not in the way I expected it was about art but also a bout a young boys life and how his life changed. His mom encouraged him to love his art and helped him and played with him. Then his mom became sick and had to go away however, it gave him more strength to continue his passion. His art was not beautiful but it was his art and people loved it. This story can touch a lot of people especially those who have lost a parent and want to live up to their aspirations.

The plot of this book to me seems to be how even if what you do isn’t beautiful or the best to keep on pushing and doing what you love. A fun activity for kids would be to do a paper machete craft and try to match it the cover of the book.

My critique of this book would be that this artist lived a hard life for a young kid but he took that experience and turned it into something he loved.

For the Lesson Sketch I would have the students draw a picture of what they think the book is about before reading it and then after reading the book I would have them draw another picture of what they think the book was about. The third and final picture could be a combination of the two beginning and after picture and tying the two together.

Here is a helpful link for other ideas for lesson plans pertaining to this book.

Week 2 Book

Wonder: Palacio, R. J. (2015). Auggie & me: Three Wonder stories (First edition.). New York: Alfred A.

At first look from this book I had no idea what it may be about until you read the summary on the back and then you get an idea. It is about a boy who lives with deformities and struggles going to school. This book opens many emotions and topics for students to talk about because this can help them to learn to never judge someone based on how they look.

The story line for this book flowed really well the plot, theme, setting and overall the whole book. This story talks about a deformed child starting middle school for the first time and how he adjusts and adapts to going to school. he talks about how he is used to people staring at hime or even being scared of him. The book describes his challenges and the peoples challenges around him.

Lesson Sketch ideas for this book would be maybe a sketch before we read the book and only read the summary and discuss what we think the book is going to be about. The second sketch idea would be to draw a picture of how we see ourselves. Third the student can draw a picture of how they see auggie not how they think he physically looks but maybe how he looks on the inside.

Week 3

Solider Bear: Dumon Tak, Bibi. Solider Bear (2008)Grand Rapids, Michigan: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Sept. 26th

Looking at this book I had no idea what it was going to be about. I figured from the title and the picture that it might be about a soldier in the army and have a hidden meaning from the bear. I had no idea this book was going to be about a real bear in the army.

The story line of this book flowed very well and describes the time of the war and how while a hard an emotional time they had many animals as a support system especially the bear. The theme of this book and the setting was well planned and described considering this event happened during a time of confusion.

A lesson Sketch idea for this book of course first lets as a class read the summary and discuss what we think this book will be about and draw a picture as a class. The second part we can do for this assignment is to draw a bear based of the description we have been given from the book and to start researching about this type of bear. For our final sketch project we will have researched this type of bear fully and draw this bear with color and describe its normal environment around the picture.

Week 4

Image result for the giver

The Giver: Lowry, Lois. author. (1993). The giver. Boston, Massachusetts :Houghton Mifflin,

When I was assigned this book I knew what it was going to be about because I had read it in middle school however, it was a good refresher reading this book again and understanding it as a sci fyi.

The story line of this book could jump around a bit and you really have to imagine what the setting is while your reading the book but its a pretty interesting book about a time in the far future.

I would have the kids draw a picture of a memory they had happy, sad, mad, etc. and I would ask them afterwards if they could get rid of one of those emotions would they and why? As a class we would talk about the pro’s and con’s of this. Another one is having student make a brochure of what they think the living environment might be like. What type of homes would be for sale?
